Lesson Plan 17/03/2011:

I HAD A PLAN FOR TODAY'S LESSON, TO GO THROUGH THE MUSIC VIDEO AND GET FEEDBACK ON HOW WE COULD IMPROVE AND REACH MY TARGET GRADE. THIS PLAN FAILED WHEN DAVID JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE ILL. I CANNOT FULLY EVALUATE THE PROMOTIONAL PACK UNTIL IT IS FINISHED. HOWEVER, THE TIME WAS NOT WASTED AS  I DID RESEARCH INTO THIS MYSELF.

This research involved looking at texts from a similar genre that use similar techniques to our music video. The aim being to find ways in which we could make the music video appeal to Pistola Kick's audience through familiarity by using similar conventions of the indie genre.

Libertines 'Can't Stand Me Now':

This video is of the indie genre and shares similar conventions: this includes the use of live performance shots and experimental editing. Lighting, mise-en-scene and cinematography has been considered. Most indie music videos contain performance shots but this one is unusual as it is almost made up of entirely these shots. This is effective when appealing to the band's audience but wont be relevant for us as our song is narrative based. However, this video is still inspiration because a variety of performance shots can make a music video more engaging rather than random instruments and pure narrative shots.

Libertines 'Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads':

Although this music video is from the same band it uses a variety of techniques to appeal to the band's audience. This time there are no performance shots as the media text is entirely narrative based. This shows we could leave out performance shots and still make our music video conventional of a indie music video. However, the narrative of this song is more exciting and provides more leeway for engaging visual techniques. Our song has a more depressing tone and the protagonist's life is boring and repetitive. If we used the same technique as with this video our music video would be repetitive and boring too. This would repel rather than attract Pistola Kicks's audience and therefore put institutions off too. However, this media text is similar to our music video in the editing sense too. This because quick cuts have been used along with dark lighting to create a sinister tone. This tone signifies that what the boys are doing is wrong whilst in our music video this creates a empathetical preferred reading.

Babyshambles 'Delivery':

Unfortunately this music video could not be embedded therefore there is a link instead. This is similar to The Libertines because Pete Doherty is a member in both bands [Babyshambles followed after Libertines.] This means similar techniques and indie conventions have been used to the music videos above. Just like 'Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads' there are no performance shots due to the fact that the band's audience has an interest in the personal habits of the frontman. This is proved by the long/mid shot of Pete Doherty stroking his cat. Instead the narrative of the song is being expressed through the band members playing a part in the video but not playing their instruments. This is unusual for a Indie music video but very effective as a substitute. I feel we need to do the same by including the band, well a band covering our song. However, as performance shots are more conventional in Indie music videos I feel we should include some of these in our music video to improve it. This media text is entirely in black and white just like ours which shows that black and white music videos are conventional in music videos of the Indie genre. As a result our music video will appeal to Pistola Kicks's audience.
