Magazine Advert Locations:

THERE ARE MANY PLACES WHERE THE MAGAZINE ADVERT FOR PISTOLA KICK'S SONG 'FRIDAY NIGHTS' COULD BE LOCATED. THIS IS BECAUSE THERE ARE A VARIETY OF MUSIC MAGAZINES. THESE INCLUDE: TERRORIZER, METAL HAMMER, KERRANG, Q, MOJO, ROCK SOUND AND NME. THIS LIST RANGES FROM THE GENRES EXTREME METAL TO COMMERCIAL INDIE AND POP MUSIC.

Terrorizer is not the magazine to advertise in because it includes Extreme Metal music like the Black Metal band 'Behemoth.' This is not the kind of magazine Pistola Kicks fans read. Metal Hammer is similar but less extreme thus making it unsuitable for the magazine advert.

Kerrang could be a place to promote in as Indie bands are often featured. However, Pistola Kicks's audience is most likely to find the music mentioned in this magazine too heavy and are therefore less likely to buy it. As a result Kerrang is also not suitable for my advert.

Q and Mojo tend to feature Classic Rock bands such as 'Thin Lizzy' rather than Indie bands such as 'Pidgeon Detectives' and 'Pistola Kicks.' As a result Pistola Kicks fans are not likely to read this magazine thus making it inappropriate to advertise in.

This leaves Rock Sound and NME which are most likely to be the magazines where our advert will be located. This is because these magazines regularly feature Indie bands similar to 'Pistola Kicks' such as 'The Pigeon Detectives' and 'The Futureheads.' Out of these two NME is the magazine which Pistola Kick's audience is most likely to read therefore this is where our magazine advert will be located.

OUR MAGAZINE ADVERT WILL BE LOCATED IN NME!

Music Video Inspiration:

During the process of creating the music video we did lots of research and found lots of inspiration. However, I did not blog these at the time therefore I shall blog the inspiration for the music video as I do the same for ancillary tasks. This may seem out of synch but that's the way it'll have to be.

Typical Digi-packs:

Typical features of Single CD digi-packs include:

  • A link to a music video or album, usually theme
  • Lyrics
  • Band photos

Ancillary Arrangements:

Our ancillary tasks must suit the genre and appeal to Pistola Kicks's audience. To do this we will use the audience profile we have discovered from our research and the band as well as researching Digi-packs and magazine adverts of a similar genre.  In order to break down this task David will focus on the magazine advert while i will focus on the digi-pack. Once the research has been completed we will work together on the actual ancillary tasks.

Digi-pack:

Research for the digi-pack will include:
  • Comparing, contrasting and getting inspiration from real Indie Digi-packs
  • The band profile and how they represent themselves
  • Audience profile
Magazine Advert:

Research for the magazine advert will include:
  • Finding adverts in music magazines for inspiration, comparing and contrasting
  • The band profile and how they represent themselves
  • Audience profile

Initial Ideas for our Digi-pack:

Frontpage:

For our frontpage we will probably have a photo of the protagonist leaning against a wall looking depressed. The washed out colour will reflect the tone of the music video.

Inner Page:

For our left inner sleeve we will probably have an image of the band with lyrics on top.

CD Page:

For our right inner sleeve we will probably have the same picture as the front.

Back Page:

The backpage could be a picture of an empty street [or busy] street from our music video.

Music Distribution:

Just like albums, singles are sold to the public through CDs and music downloads. These downloads are either illegal or from Itunes. When bought from Itunes album artwork is also included. As part of our ancillary tasks we will be creating an CD digi-pack for the song 'Friday Nights.' Split into sections there will be four pages to our digi-pack. This will include an album cover, an inner page, an inner page for the CD itself and a back page. Essentially, we are creating artwork for the band so they can make money out of their music instead of Apple getting money from downloads. This means our promotional pack must reflect the band and attract the audience. This could be done through links to the music video and its meaning and by using their logo so the promotional pack is easily recognisable. Pistola Kicks's fans like their music realistic and meaningful, we could use this by using stills from our meaningful music video.

Inspiration: 'Voices' by Disturbed

This music video is of an entirely different music genre to Pistola Kicks but uses similar techniques to our music video. As a result it was inspiration to us. Set in an office and separated by performance shots and shots of individuals playing instruments the video has a similar narrative to our music video as the protagonist with the headphones is overloaded with work and is looking for a better life. Instead of being depressed like our protagonist this one is homicidal and wants to hurt others around him. This reflects the heavy metal genre. Both this protagonist and ours are bored and the synchronisation of shots to the beat express this. At 2:12 David Draiman's ghostly image appears on another shot whilst he is singing to protagonist whom cant see him. This was inspiration for us because we thought it was very effective. At 3:08 there are short cuts of a man playing guitar much like our music video. We thought this was effective so we thought we could try this technique in ours.

Bass Shots:

THERE IS MORE TO THE BASS SHOTS THAT APPEARS TO THE NAKED EYE, LET ME EXPLAIN WHY!

In order to get the bass shots right I figured out the bass line by ear, this was a bit more complex than I had previously planned as the dodgey internet at home stopped me from listening to the full song on Facebook or Myspace. As a result I had to use the Umbro video on Youtube and figure out the rest of the song when I had the resources. This time happened to be two days later in a free with a school macbook and a CD with the song on. I then wrote down the bassline on a tab.

Final Music Video:

ITS OFFICIAL, OUR MUSIC VIDEO IS FINALLY COMPLETE ... NEXT UP ANCILLARY TASKS!

Today was hectic. Firstly I had to get the bass shots as yesterday I 'forgot' the memory card whilst it was in my pencil case all along [a silly mistake on my behalf.] With the memorycard in hand [or rather in camera] i could get the shots that i needed. In a free I played bass whilst my friend filmed. We experimented with a variety of shots and in the editing suite David and I decided on a longshot showing the whole of my bass from machineheads to plug. I then uploaded the footage and chopped and changed small minor details that i discovered in a previous lesson. Throughout the day David and I flittered in and out of the editing suite chopping and changing and adding bass to the timeline.

My Beautiful Bass 'Russell'

Most of the music video was fine but we made a few major changes. This inclued changing the ending from a badly lipsynched peice of footage to shots of the protagonist leaving the bathroom clean-shaven. These shots are symbolic of the protagonist changing his mental attitudes towards life and moving on in the world clean and proud but still keeping his boring job. We also added a three page split with three instruments: bass, drums and guitar with blurred edges.
